The Staff at Eliot Veterinary Hospital
Dr. Shannon Emmons, DVM and Owner
While growing up in South Berwick, Maine Dr. Emmons knew at a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. As a Marshwood student she worked as a veterinary assistant for Dr. Lee at South Berwick Veterinary Hospital. Following graduation from high school she went on to attend the University of Vermont and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary concentration. Dr. Emmons then continued her academic pursuits at Atlantic Veterinary College graduating in May of 2017 with a Doctorate of Veterinary medicine. Her primary areas of interest while in veterinary school were nutrition, animal behavior, dentistry and veterinary pathology. Dr. Emmons bought the practice from Dr. Lee in June of 2019 and has been very excited working with the community as a small business owner.
She currently lives in Lebanon with her husband, dogs, cats, reptiles and horses. While not at work she enjoys hiking with her dogs, horseback riding, skiing, gardening, knitting and reading.
Dr. Jana Thomas, DVM
Dr. Thomas graduated in 2013 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to her DVM, she obtained a Master’s degree in biomedical sciences, researching pain management in red-tailed hawks. She loves all things fuzzy, feathered, and scaly, including both pets and wildlife, and is pursuing specialty certification (DABVP) in exotic companion mammals. She has been working at Eliot Veterinary Hospital since 2020, and formally joined the staff in 2021, after practicing in New Hampshire and Massachusetts since graduation. She lives with her husband, daughter, dog, cat and chickens right here in Eliot. In her spare time, she is looking for the perfect pair of bonded bunnies to join the household, and likes to knit, weave, sew, garden, hike, and read really silly books.
Jeff Hammersmith, Practice Manager
Jeff was elated to join the EVH family as the practice manager in July of 2019. As the practice manager he makes sure the day to day operations of the clinic run smoothly and handles whatever problems may arise. He applied for the position of professional puppy snuggler, but this was the closest he could get. He graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in biology in 2013 and from Southern Maine Community College with a degree in Paramedicine in 2019. When not at EVH he works as a paramedic in the area or enjoys his time off hiking with his dogs, or taking care of projects around the farm.
